Change does not have to begin with criticism

New Year messages often suggest that transformation starts by identifying what is wrong with you. Lasting change is more often supported by curiosity, safety, and a clear sense of why something matters.

Before setting a goal, notice how your body responds to it. Expansion, dread, energy, and numbness are all useful information.

Choose a direction, not a verdict

Instead of demanding a new identity, name a direction you want to move toward: more connection, steadiness, play, honesty, or rest. Then choose a small action that expresses that value.

A flexible intention can adapt to illness, caregiving, work demands, and changing capacity. Adaptation is not failure; it is responsiveness.

Let support be part of the plan

Many patterns developed in relationship and soften in relationship. Consider who can encourage you without monitoring or shaming you.

Therapy can help uncover what a familiar pattern has been doing for you, so change becomes an act of care rather than a campaign against yourself.
